Data captured by Welch Allyn connected devices at the Medica International Healthcare Trade Fair shows the utility of Welch Allyn Vitals technology
Skaneateles Falls, NY, USA, January 8, 2013— Welch Allyn, a leading medical diagnostic device company that specializes in helping clinicians improve patient outcomes, today shared the results for its informal assessment of the 'Health of Medica.' Using its newest generation of digital connected devices, the company captured the vital signs of several hundred attendees who visited the Welch Allyn booth, automatically documenting the data using the company's Connex™ Vitals Management software to store the results.
"We thought it would be interesting to informally capture the basic vital signs of Medica attendees to indicate whether those people who work in the healthcare field are indeed 'healthier' than the average person and build awareness of the importance of knowing one's own vital signs," said Pascal Gand, vice president, Europe and Middle East, South and East Region and Channel Marketing at Welch Allyn.
Upon aggregating the data collected, Welch Allyn found that the Medica attendees measured had an average blood pressure of 133.7/83.6—which would qualify as prehypertensive according to the European Society of Hypertension (a systolic blood pressure measurement between 120 and 139 and/or a diastolic measurement between 80 and 89). The Welch Allyn informal data gathering also found that approximately 31 percent of Medica attendees were recorded as having hypertensive blood pressure (a systolic pressure of 140 and above and/or diastolic measurement of 90 and above), slightly below the average of one in three adults worldwide who are reported to have hypertension, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Other average readings for attendees included an average mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 100.4, an average pulse rate of 75 beats per minute, and an average Sp02 (oxygen saturation) level of 97.2 percent.
"Collecting, capturing and documenting vitals at such a rapid pace at Medica was a true test for the Welch Allyn Connex® Electronic Vitals Documentation System," Gand said. "We were able to efficiently collect attendees vital signs and manage that data in one central location without the fear of transposing numbers or having measurements written on pieces of paper getting lost. In fact, U.S. studies show that in a typical 200-bed hospital, more than 10,000 vital signs documentation errors potentially occur every year. This inefficiency compromises clinical decision-making and puts patient safety and facilities at risk. Our systems help mitigate this risk."
