Online Resource Illustrates Basic Diagnosis Procedures for Medical School Students

Welch Allyn, a leading manufacturer of frontline medical produc ts and solutions, today introduced Diagnosis 101, an online educational resource for medical school students just starting out on their quest to become physicians.  The company's microsite, www.welchallyn.com/diagnosis101, demonstrates the ins and outs of basic diagnostic procedures including ophthalmoscopy, otsoscopy, blood pressure measurement and auscultation in a fun, interactive environment.

"The first couple of years of medical school can be overwhelming," says Cindy Kuiper, senior category manager, EENT and Thermometry, at Welch Allyn.  "We designed our site to help students become more comfortable with basic physical diagnosis as they embark on their career journey.  It includes animations and demonstrations of essential diagnostic techniques, illustrations of anatomies, and an overview of the functions of the eye, ear, heart and lungs.  Ultimately, it helps future physicians learn what they need to do, and how they need to do it, using tools that will become as essential to them as a hammer is to a carpenter."

The ophthalmology section of the site includes information about how to conduct a basic eye exam as well as detailed descriptions of the anatomy of the eye that will help students more accurately diagnose disease.  The otoscopy section details the anatomy of the inner ear and illustrates how to conduct a basic ear exam, and the blood pressure section demonstrates appropriate technique and shows physicians how to use a gauge and cuff.  Finally, the auscultation section lets visitors listen to and download recordings of the circulatory and respiratory sounds of the body as heard through a stethoscope.

"The basic tools and techniques showcased on this site are critical to every physician's success," added Kuiper.  They are the most common exams performed by caregivers in frontline settings around the world, but they are fundamental skills that will stay with them for a lifetime-much like some of the Welch Allyn devices they will carry.  Our intent in creating this site is to educate and inform, but it's really about making life a little easier for the students."
